We open on a FLASHBACK. Juliet is sitting in what looks like a therapist's office, looking uncomfortable. A woman, Harper Stanhope, enters, and apologizes for the wait. She says that today is just to meet and greet one another. Juliet says she doesn't need therapy and Harper says then they shouldn't call it therapy, they can just talk. Harper asks Juliet that now that she's been here a week, what's her least favorite part so far? Juliet says it's being treated like a celebrity. It makes her feel isolated and alone. Harper tells Juliet that maybe it feels like all eyes are on her but she's not a celebrity and soon enough she'll realize she's just like everyone else. Juliet knows.
Suddenly Tom bursts in - fakeout! - and apologizes for interrupting, but Ben needs to see Juliet right away. Harper says, "She's all yours" and welcomes Juliet to the island.
Outside, Tom tells Juliet that Harper is a piece of work, he knows from personal experience. He takes her to a house, where Ben welcomes her to her humble abode. Juliet says that they shouldn't have gone to the trouble - she's only going to be there six months. But Ben says that she's there to do important research so they pulled out all the stops. He wants her to feel at home.
PRESENT:
Juliet is fixing her bamboo tent poles. Sun and Jin are playing in the sand with Vincent - awww! - and Sun goes to help Juliet. She asks her why she's fixing her tent when they'll be off the island in a few days and Juliet says that she still needs someplace to sleep tonight.
Jack approaches and asks if anyone has seen Daniel and Charlotte - their things are gone. Jin tells Sun in Korean that he saw them head off into the jungle. Jack asks why he didn't say anything and Jin says "You said they are friend" (isn't it super-cute when Jin speaks English?) Jack says they've got lots of ground to cover, and Jack, Juliet, Sun and Jin head out to find them. Sun and Jin take Vincent.
Sidenote: it makes me happy that someone is taking care of Vincent again. After Walt left and Shannon died, he was a little orphan doggie. I'm glad he found makeshift parents. Yay!
In the jungle, Jack and Juliet get separated and it starts to pour. Juliet hears whispers and turns around, totally freaked. She calls out for Jack, but instead, from the brush, emerges Harper. "Long time no see" she says.
Juliet asks Harper what she's doing there and she says he has a message from Ben: Daniel and Charlotte are going to the Tempest. If they deploy the gas, everyone will die. Juliet asks how to stop them. Harper says that she can stop them by shooting them. Jack calls for Juliet and approaches. He points the gun at Harper and asks who she is. Harper says she's an old friend of Juliets and that she just told her where Dan ahd Charlotte are headed. She tells Jack, "You and your gun can go, too."
They hear more whispers and look around, and Harper disappears.
FLASHBACK:
Juliet is crying on the floor of her lab. She hears something and goes to the storage room. Goodwin is there, looking for gauze. She asks if he's okay and he says yes, he works at the power station and pressed up against a transformer. Juliet tells him she'll look at his arm, which is badly burnt. She starts to bandage his arm and he says, "You're Burke, right? The baby doctor?" He says he heard that they lost Henrietta that morning. Juliet starts to cry again. She says that pregnant women die on the island, and it was her job to fix it but she can't, so it's her fault. Goodwin tells her that nobody expects her to fix it overnight. He asks if she has any friends to talk to, and she says no. He asks about Harper and Juliet says that she can tell Harper hates her. She thinks Harper is a mean, spiteful woman. And that's when Goodwin tells her that Harper is his wife. D'oh! Goodwin is totally gracious about it, though, and tells Juliet that he's around to talk if she needs him. She tells him that if he promises not to tell Harper what she said, she'll promise not to tell anyone he lied about his injury - she knows a chemical burn when she sees one. Goodwin says it's a deal.
PRESENT:
It's still raining in the jungle. Juliet tells Jack that Daniel and Charlotte are heading for the Tempest. Jack asks what that is and Juliet says it's safer if she doesn't talk about it. Jack pleads and Juliet relents to tell him it's an electrical station that powers the whole island. Jack asks why they're going there. Juliet is reluctant and Jack says, "If there's something you need to tell me, now's the time. Juliet says that all she needs is for Jack to help her. Will he? Jack agrees and says that if they move all night they might catch them. Juliet thanks him.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the island, where it is not raining, Daniel and Charlotte consult a map to the Tempest. Dan asks what happens if he can't do it. Charlotte says that she knows he can. Someone is coming. Kate emerges from the trees. Charlotte holds her at gumpoint but Daniel says, "It's okay, it's only Kate."
They ask about Miles and Kate says they're treating him fine. She asks what they are doing in the middle of the jungle. They tell Kate that the phone died and they're looking for batteries. Kate is onto them, though. She asks Dan to see his pack and looks inside. The last thing she sees are gas masks before Charlotte knocks her out.
Back to Jack and Juliet. Juliet tells Jack about Harper and that she was a therapist. "It's stressful being an Other." Ha! Jack says she seemed hostile, and Juliet says that there are things from her past she'd rather not talk about. Jack says that he's got those things, too, and that Juliet read them in his file. Juliet says that Jack doesn't want to see her file.
FLASHBACK:
Juliet is in the lab, explaining to Ben that the problem occurs during the second trimester, with the pregnant women's immune systems. The white blood cells plummet and the immune system turns on the fetus. Ben asks her if she knows why, but she says it's too early to tell. But it's only happening to women who conceived on the island. They're interrupted by Goodwin, who seems surprised to see Ben there and covers with a story about an extra sandwich. Juliet refuses the sandwich, saying she has an appointment with Harper in ten minutes. Ben looks suspicious.
Later, Juliet is at Harper's. Harper asks her what she thinks about Ben. Juliet says hes' great, smart, intense, challenging, has been great to her, etc. Harper says, "Of course he has, you look just like her." Before Juliet can find out what she means, Harper remarks that Juliet and Goodwin have become friends. Juliet says Goodwin is very helpful. Harper asks how long they've been sleeping together. Juliet denies it but Harper tells her that she followed them and watched them. She says that it doesn't matter to her anymore, but she doesn't want her husgand to get hurt. Juliet says she'd never hurt Goodwin. Harper says she's not worried about Juliet, she's worried about Ben.
PRESENT:
At Otherville, Locke is cutting up a dead rabbit to eat. Claire comes to say hello and asks what's going on with Miles. Locke says he's bringing Miles food and water until he talks. Claire would like to talk to Miles. She wants to know who they are, and why they're not interested in rescuing them. Locke won't allow it. Claire tells Locke he's taking the wrong approach: he killed one of them and Ben shot one of them. No wonder they think they're hostile. Claire thinks she'll get answers out of Miles because she's less intimidating. Locke still won't have it, and plays the Charlie card. Claire says that all Charlie told them was whose ship it WASN'T. Doesn't Locke want to know whose ship it WAS?
Ben is in his "cell" reading a Philip K. Dick novel. Locke comes in, and gives him the cooked rabbit, saying they're out of chickens. Ben asks Locke if the rabbit had a number on it and Locke says no. He tells Ben to eat, change, and put his laundry by the door - he'll be back in 15 minutes. Ben asks Locke if the revolution has begun yet. He says it's a tough position being the leader. People start second-guessing decisions. It starts off innocent, but pretty soon there's a full-blown insurrection. Ben says everyone will be very angry at Locke when they find out he doesn't have a plan. Locke says he knows Ben's plan - to raise $3.2 mil. He gives Ben a dollar. Ben says he can help Locke - they have common interests and a common enemy. Locke asks if he means the people on the freighter, and Ben says no, the person they work for. He says that if Locke will let him out, let him sleep in a bed and eat with utensils, he'll show him what he means.
FLASHBACK:
Juliet is swimming in the ocean in her teeny bikini and goes to Goodwin, who is lying in the sand. They drink wine and are all romantic and stuff. Goodwin says he hates keeping things so private. He's been sleeping on the couch for a year, can't he just tell Harper? Juliet says it's not a good idea because Ben wouldn't like it. Goodwin says that everyone knows that Ben has a crush on Juliet but it's not a problem - Goodwin works with dangerous chemicals and could kill all of them, and Ben has enough on his plate to care about them. Juliet says she thinks Ben would be upset and Goodwin wants to know what he'd do.
And then we see the Others witness the plane crash. Ben sends Ethan to the fuselage and Goodwin to the tail secton. He wants lists in three days. Harper and Juliet glare at each other.
PRESENT:
Juliet and Jack are still in the jungle when they see bloodied, unconscious Kate on the ground. Jack runs to help her and Juliet, visibly jealous, says she'll go to get some water. Jack brings Kate around and Kate tells him what happened with Daniel and Charlotte, and about the gas masks. They look for Juliet, but she's gone. He grabs the gun and they look for her.
In Otherville, Locke leads a tied up Ben into his living room and warns him against playing games or tricks. Ben tells Locke the answers are behind a painting. Locke removes the painting on the wall to see a safe. Ben tells him the combination (36-15-28) and Locke pulls out a VHS tape that says "Red Sox." Ha! Ben tells him he taped over the game. They watch the tape, which is a surveillance tape of Charles Widmore. Ben says that this is the man whose boat is offshore. He's trying to find the island. On the video, Widmore has a blindfolded prisoner. Locke asks who the prisoner is. Ben says it's one of his people who had the misfortune of getting caught. Locke asks how Widmore knows but Ben doesn't know. But he knows what Widmore wants. Ben tells Locke how 5000 people flocked to Gainesville, FL to see mold in the shape of the Virgin Mary. How many people would flock to see Locke, who couldn't walk until he crashed on the island? Widmore wants to exploit the island and would do anything to possess it. On the tape, Widmore shoves his prisoner into a car and looks in the camera. Ben gives Locke a file: some is vague, some is guesswork, some is concrete. He apologizes for not telling Locke before - it was his only bargaining chip left. Locke says he has one more question: who is his man on the boat? Ben says he'll tell Locke but he might want to sit down.
In the jungle, Kate is tracking Charlotte and Dan, as well as Juliet. Jack asks her why she went back with Locke. She say she wanted to find out if the people on the freighter knew who she was, and that she was wanted for murder. Jack asks if they knew, and Kate says yes. They keep looking for Juliet.
Juliet arrives at the Tempest, a large old station. She sees a destroyed control panel and then openst the heavy door to get inside. She puts down her pack and draws her gun.
FLASHBACK
Jules shows up at Ben's house with a tray of rolls. Ben tells her to come in, he's about to get his ham out of the oven. He's very chipper. Juliet asks where everyone is - she thought it was a dinner party - but Ben informs her that it's just the two of them. Ben thanks Juliet for being so good with Zach and Emma, and Juliet says that they're good kids, but they've been asking about their mother in LA. Ben says they'll stop asking in time. Juliet asks why they were on the list and Ben tells her not to question the list. She asks about Goodwin - he's been undercover for three weeks. Now that they've got everyone on the tail section list, can't he return? Ben says that Goodwin has been making a passionate case for Ana-Lucia. Goodwin thinks she'd be valuable and Ben doesn't see it but Goodwin feels passionately inappropriate. Juliet is visibly upset. She says it's a risk after losing Ethan, but Ben says that there's no reason for Goodwin to hurry back; his assignment will be over soon.
PRESENT:
Inside the Tempest, an alarm is blaring and a voice is saying "Computer Switching to Manual. This test is unauthorized." Juliet sneaks up on Daniel and Charlotte, who are wearing hazmat suits. The voice says "Warning. Manual Entry. Override Detected. Repeted Attempt to Access Storage Tanks Result in Contamination." Juliet sneaks up behind Daniel, who is working away at a console, holds the gun on him and he asks what she's doing there.
She tells him to step away and he says he's sorry but he can't. The alarm says "One minute to contamination." Juliet rips open Daniel's hazmat suit and says that if he wants to release the gas, he'll die with the rest of them. Daniel says he's not trying to release them ("them?"), he's trying to render the gas inert. Charlotte appears out of nowhere and starts beating the crap out of Jules. A girlfight ensues as Daniel works at the console. Finally, Charlotte stops and says to Juliet "Look me in the eye and tell me you are certain he wouldn't use the gas to kill everyone." She says that if Juliet wants to stop them, she can shoot them both. Juliet looks uncertain. With one second to spare, Daniel stops the poisonous gas. "That was a close one," he says.
FLASHBACK:
Ben comes into Juliet's office and asks what she's reading. She says it's Jack's file, Mikhail dropped it off. He's a spinal surgeon with extensive experience in tumor removal. She's curious that Ben isn't more excited. Ben says he needs Juliet to come with him.
He leads her through the jungle. Ben says that after the last raid on the tail section, the survivors left the beach, and he sent Pickett and Tom to track them. But they came across something... and he shows her Goodwin's impaled, decaying body. Jules starts to cry and says "Oh my God" like a dozen times. She asks what happened and Ben says that there were no witnesses. She asks Ben why he brought here there instead of his wife, and then she realizes that Ben knew that this would happen. He sent Goodwin to the tailies because he wanted him to die. Ben gets angry and says that after everything he did to get Juliet there and keep here there, "you're MINE." He leaves her by Goodwin's body and says "Take as much time as you need."
PRESENT:
Juliet and Charlotte exit the Tempest an Jack and Kate approach. Kate holds the gun on them and says that they knocked her unconscious. Charlotte apologizes, says she had no choice. She says that Daniel is inside securing the facility and he'd be happy to explain. But he saved their lives. Kate goes with Charlotte to hear the story from Dan, but Jack says he'll take their word for it. He asks Juliet if she's okay and touches her face tenderly. Juliet tells him that Ben wanted her to kill them. Jack asks how Ben could tell her and Juliet says that he knew where to find her and knew what Daniel and Charlotte were doing. She says that they are here to wage war, but Ben is going to win, and Jack shouldn't be near her when it happens. Jack asks why not and Juliet says, "Because he thinks I'm his and he knows how I feel about you." Jack kisses her.
At Otherville, Hurley is spanking Sawyer at horseshoes ("Just lucky, I guess," he says) when they see Ben walking, free to his house. Sawyera asks him what he's doing out and Ben says, "See you at dinner!"
