I don't know. I actually looked him up in Lostpedia last night because he has me so intrigued!
On Lostpedia they mention that Alvar Hanso (the guy that started the Dharma Initiative) was experimenting with life extending stuff. So if that was the case, then why wouldn't Richard be using it too? Seems reasonable.
