OK, I'm still going over in my head the happenings of this week's episode and I'm confused on a point (or two).
We've known for quite a while that there is a huge fight going on between Ben and Widmore. This season we learned that Widmore was actually an "Other" for quite a while until he got the boot. So, when it comes down to it, Ben and Widmore are both "Others" who are fighting among one another.
Then we have this whole "What lies in the Shadow of the Statue" group who are obviously anti-Widmore, and seem to not be a part of Ben's clan. After getting a bit more info about them this week, I decided that perhaps these "Shadow" people could quite possibly be remaining Dharma peeps who either escaped the purge and/or were off-island during it.
I'm trying to find information on the beginnings of Dharma since someone on Buzz mentioned that a schism occurred between the Others and half went to Dharma half stayed put. I couldn't remember this so, naturally, I turned to Lostpedia.
According to their timeline, and Dharma page, I don't see anything about an "Others"-schism.
- Do you guys know about a schism? Or is that the researchers/scientists just showed up and took over "Others" land?
- Also, do you think perhaps these shadow/statue people could be Dharma leftovers?

Hey Sy, seems like I haven't seen you in a while!
Anyway - I don't remember anything about a schism, maybe that was someone's theory. There was never anything on the show that mentioned part of Dharma joining the others. It seemed like Ben (taking Ethan with him) took them all out giving them a choice. Think about it this way, had they known they had to choose or a war was coming, would they have been gassed just sitting around on park benches?
And I don't think the Statue people are Dharma folks - these people were scientists, teachers, miners...etc...didn't seem like bounty hunters to me. Although looks can be deceiving...so who knows - Chang for seems capable of something like this, but there is nothing really there to make this anything besides a wild guess.
1I don't remember hearing anything about a schism, either.
2It has been too long Z!
All right, I had never heard about a schism, but I forget things easily, so I wanted to make sure.
My little theory is that once Dharma was purged, there were bound to be some of them off the island theorizing, recruiting, whatever. So that happened about 15 years ago (1992) and ever since then the remainder has been recruiting to reclaim the island and get revenge for Ben's deeds. So they put together this group of people to get back there.
My husband always says it's no use to theorize about Lost because they always throw something random in there that you can rarely foresee.
But I still think it's fun.
3Sounds like a good theory to me.
I also think it's fun to theorize, but I usually do it during the show and then forget.
4My friends and I were talking about this last night, except we've all reached a point of boredom with this show. There was NO ONE more into this show than we were at the beginning...we played the whole Lost Experience, spent hours on the Hanso Website, analyzed the Hanso Foundation "commercials" that aired during S3. Now that we realize none of that stuff matters, we're all just waiting to see how it all wraps up. It better be something spectacular.

..makes sense to me, but you know what that means - if is makes any sort of sense, it is not likely to happen on Lost.
I love theorizing as well! It the best part of the show!

7That's true. Making sense is never a priority.
I agree RCL, a lot of the stuff this season has seemed a bit predictable. Like Chang and Miles, Ben and Penelope, all this stuff we kind of "knew" and when they finally told us, I felt like, "duh?"
8Right. There needs to be a MAJOR plot twist that nobody saw coming. It was so much fun when everything that happened totally rocked my world.
9and isn't it a rerun this week?
10I honestly don't know...
11This week is a retrospective looking at the 3 years after Ben moved to the Island.
12Nooooooooooo! Are you KIDDING me? Why!?!
13I know, I hate that sh*t.
14I totally agree about stuff being predictable this year, but I wondered was it the writing, or have I become too obsessed and looked into stuff so much that I am no longer surprised anymore? Maybe both - fans have gotten better at digging and predicting and the writers can only get so loony without completely losing it.
